Demonware creates and provides the online services behind hugely popular video game franchises such as Call of Duty and Skylanders. We do matchmaking, microtransactions, and data analytics for almost half a billion users. Demonware has offices in Dublin, Ireland; Vancouver, Canada; and Shanghai, China, and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc.

Demonware’s Titles Department is responsible for developing, launching and maintaining services for some of the world’s largest gaming franchises. We are looking for an experienced technical leader to join this department to work on classic and emerging franchises, leveraging many of the exciting technologies created by Demonware and developing new online services to support the specific needs and challenges of our partner game studios.

Many of our services are developed using Python and C++ and we use supporting technologies such as MySQL, Kubernetes, Redis, and Cassandra. Our development is geared towards low-latency and large-scale distributed systems that can handle millions of concurrently connected users with average response times of < 100 ms.
As well as building large scale systems, we expect technical leaders to be able to mentor and grow others in the organisation. So we are looking for someone who enjoys software engineering challenges and the opportunity to pass on that experience to others.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the team's software development process works effectively and supports the pace and needs of the project
  • Good understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle including, but not limited to, agile software development methodology (Scrum or Kanban).
  • Ensure the software produced by the team achieves the quality bar expected for our services by both Demonware and game studios.
  • Organize and coordinate team members to effectively work on features together and with other teams in Demonware
  • Own, operate and support the services and features the team develop.
  • Providing technical mentorship to team members through software engineering best practices
  • Conduct 1-1 meetings, set individual goals and development objectives for team members
  • Collaborate with the team project manager to map out and deliver team objectives and priorities for the year based on company goals and studios’ requirements

Requirements:
  • 3+ years of experience in similar technical leadership role (other combinations of technical skills and experience may be considered)
  • Experience designing, developing, and supporting scalable services in production
  • Ability to own and steer technical direction for multiple projects with minimal supervision
  • Ability to own the day-to-day fundamentals of engineering projects with minimal supervision
  • Ability to engage, develop, and retain high-performing engineers
  • Previous experience building and leading high-performing software development teams

  • Willingness to travel and accommodate a flexible work schedule that includes being on-call
  • Expertise in effective project management processes, software development methodologies, and their application
  • Has initiative, and is able to complete complex tasks with minimal supervision
  • Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent program
