At Sledgehammer Games, this role will specialize in building and delivering key technology and workflows that enables artists to quickly implement visual effects and destruction masterpieces.  

Our Technical Art team at Sledgehammer Games maybe small but believe it or not, the few people we have on this team possess over 50 years of experience. With your help, we hope to not only add a few more years, but hope to add new ideas, new techniques, and new way of thinking. 

The ideal candidate will have a strong eye for Art Quality and a working knowledge of run time art requirements toward visual effects and destruction. This role ensures that our effects will run at expected frame rates, fit within memory and disk foot prints. Additionally, you will provide technical reviews and guidance for best practices on performance and procedures for all of our artists and lighters. You are knowledgeable and up to date on modern trends in real time shaders, materials and texture map authoring for highly optimized effects.

Your orders and directives:
  • Create tools and processes that assist in authoring, vfx, destruction simulations, and post process effects.
  • Mentoring other tech artists, art optimization, and tool development.
  • Help define the technical quality standards, overseeing the development of art pipelines, and setting technical production goals.
  • Contribute to the development of artistic techniques and processes utilized to define and achieve a product's visual style and encourage artistic technical evolution within the studio. 
  • Trains and mentors tech artists in developing advanced technical skills.
  • Provides input on the technical methods to achieve the artistic goals and vision through all phases of the game development cycle.
  • Serves as a technical resource for all phases of production and other studio art needs. 

The medals and honors you must have earned:
  • The ability to communicate complex processes effectively either individually with team members, or within group settings.
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to break down tasks and assignments and prioritize them into workable pieces on a daily, weekly, and project length basis.
  • Excellent data management skills, with the ability to manage and track large amounts of data as they go through the art pipeline
  • Has trained and mentored multiple artists
  • Has written and edited tools in Python, C#, javascript, mel
  • Solid understanding of Maya and the Maya API
  • Some previous or next-gen video game platform experience (e.g. PS4, Xbox-One.)

What you should know to get double XP!     
  • C++ Programming 
  • Extensive portfolio with examples of current, hands-on work, including vfx and in-game simulations. 
  • Multiple examples of tools and scripts to assist in the creation of all types of art assets from particles to simulation.
  • Experience creating Houdini digital assets.
